Appropriation is something we need to continue to grapple with. And appropriation exists in almost every single style of Modern and Contemporary dance forms, even more so in Fusion. And, as we deal with the progress of information availability and freedom of interpretation, it’s very difficult to keep aside between what is appropriation versus a simple evolution; something similar to the ones between a fusion versus an youtube-inspired repackaged product. It’s an emotional, and highly contentious.

Moderation is the keyword here that bridges between appropriation and evolution. The boundaries of containment for appropriation lies to what extent you’d like to experiment with, not with the audience or viewer or a dance patron, but with the forms of dance itself so that the basic tenets of dancing do not go away – i.e Storytelling.
